Sponsoring Refugees
What Is Sponsorship?
Canadian citizens, individually or in groups, can sponsor refugees who have been screened and are eligible to come to Canada. Through different sponsorship programs, Canadians help thousands of refugees each year by providing financial, logistical, and emotional support.
Sponsors connect refugees to resources such as housing, clothing and food. Sponsorships of all kinds usually last for one year, but some refugees may be eligible for sponsorship assistance for up to three years.
Below are the five different methods available for refugee sponsorship.
Sponsorship Agreement Holders
Organizations all over the country have agreements with the Government of Canada to sponsor refugees directly or collaborate with others in the community to support refugee sponsorship. These organizations or groups are called Sponsorship Agreement Holders (SAHs).
Blended Visa Office Referred Program
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) matches eligible refugees with private sponsors in Canada through the Blended Visa Office Referred (BVOR) Program.
Groups Of Five
Five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents can arrange to sponsor a refugee collectively. All of the group members must be at least the legal age of majority and live where the refugee will settle. Groups of Five are responsible for the emotional and financial support of the refugee(s) for the full sponsorship period, which is usually one year.
Community Sponsors
A community sponsor is an organization, association, or corporation that commits to sponsor a refugee or refugee family, much like a private sponsor. Community sponsors do not have to be legally incorporated, and may form partnerships with other individuals or organizations.
Joint Assistance
The Joint Assistance Sponsorship (JAS) program supports refugees who come to Canada with special needs such as medical disabilities, trauma from violence, discrimination or come with large families. The refugees in this program receive government support and are matched with a private sponsorship group.

SAH Association
The Canadian Refugee Sponsorship Agreement Holder Association is a national membership organization. There, Sponsorship Agreement Holders will find tools, templates, resources, and support.
Refugee Sponsorship Training Program
